I've been studying Duolingo with earnest and just picked up Pimsleur's vietnamese lessons, but I only really desire to speak the southern dialect. Am I wasting a lot of time with these programs?

If you're concerned about sticking to something, I'd suggest finishing the pimsleur course before adding anything. Or doing it until you're bored. Pimsleur is a good basic introduction if that's what you want right now, and you like using it and can motivate yourself to complete it.

It is a great beginning tool. After I finished pimsleur, I was able to have some basic conversations on italki. And when I finished pimsleur, I went to 30-60 minutes a day of LingQ podcasts, and between that and the italki lessons I've definitely grown exponentially.

Apr 8, 2024 · If you do 90 lessons, you'll have total mastery of a small vocabulary, and thus an extremely solid foundation for more advanced work. 30 lessons is barely enough and less than 30 just gives pronunciation practice, which is useful but not the real point of Pimsleur.
